VICTORIA, BC – Lisa Helps, Mayor of Victoria, has endorsed Sonia Furstenau, MLA for Cowichan Valley, in her bid to become the next leader of the B.C. Green Party.
“I don’t belong to any political party and I’ve never made a public endorsement.,” said Ms. Helps.
“But I’ve known Sonia Furstenau for many years – first as a regional director and now as an MLA – and I want to support her. In this time of so much division and polarization in politics, I can’t think of a better person to lead the B.C. Greens. Sonia is thoughtful, intentional, collaborative and most importantly, she really listens and can bring people together.”
Helps is making a non-partisan endorsement of Furstenau as a non-member. The B.C. Green Party is opening the leadership to non-members under a newly created ‘supporter class.’
“I am honoured to have Lisa’s endorsement,” said Furstenau.
“My goal for the B.C. Green Party is to build an inclusive organization with a vision and policies that appeal widely to British Columbians. I’m delighted that my campaign is attracting members and non-members alike.
“Lisa is an exemplary leader who has been a positive force for change for Victoria. I look forward to continuing to work with her on the issues that matter to us both – addressing poverty and inequality; tackling the climate crisis; diversifying our economy and stimulating innovation; and making our communities healthier, safer places to live.”
