VICTORIA B.C. – B.C. Greens Leader Sonia Furstenau joined candidates Kate O’Connor (Saanich South), Devyani Singh (Vancouver-Point Grey) and Harrison Johnston (North Vancouver-Seymour) for a press conference to discuss why their commitment to climate action inspired them to run with the B.C. Greens.
“The overlapping crises we face are inspiring a new generation of leaders to step forward,” said Furstenau.
“The other two parties are intent on continuing to give billions in subsidies to the worst contributors to the climate crisis, even as our communities increasingly come under threat from wildfires, flooding and other extreme weather events. Kate, Devyani and Harrison understand that we need to take action on climate change in order to build a secure future. I’m honoured to be running alongside them as we put forward our plan for a more equitable and sustainable province.”
O’Connor, a climate, youth and mental health advocate, who will turn 18 shortly before election day, said: “We have less than 10 years to reduce emissions enough to avert climate breakdown, and young people are leading a global movement demanding our future is protected. The B.C. Greens are the only party that grasps the reality of the crisis we’re up against.”
Dr. Singh, a scientist with a Ph.D from UBC, said: “I am a climate scientist, and I am running to bring more honesty, science, and transparency to B.C.’s Legislature. It is time we treated the climate crisis with urgency. Politicians have repeatedly ignored scientists, so I will bring the science to them. As a queer woman of color, I will ensure that all voices are heard and that environmental justice includes social justice.”
Johnston added: “I was a lead organizer of the Vancouver climate strike which brought more than 100,000 people to the streets. Since then I’ve watched John Horgan double down on subsidizing fracking projects. Now I’m stepping up because I can’t wait any longer for our government to protect my generation’s future.”
