Public Meeting
Tuesday, May 31 @ 7 PM – Shawnigan Lake Community Centre
The owners of 3170/3172 Shawnigan Lake Road have applied to amend the zoning designation of 170/3172 Shawnigan Lake Road to legalize an existing non-conforming saw mill presently situated on the eastern side of the subject property. The property is currently zoned Suburban Residential (R-2), a zone that does not permit saw mill use.

Vancouver Province – March 24, 2016
I have been living in a bubble for years, thinking that the Environment Ministry was there to protect the environment and the resources of the people they represent. Watching recent news, that bubble has burst.
No comment is what you often hear from Environment Minister Mary Polak on issues of water safety at Shawnigan Lake and Spallumcheen, where they have had no tap water for a year. Recently, with regard to Shawnigan Lake and the residents’ win in court, we heard “the ministry said its staff will need to review the decision to fully understand its impact before providing further comment”.
More troubling was a quote on Shawnigan’s water, that “the only slightly elevated levels … only affect those things such as taste or laundry staining.” I have lost all faith in Polak’s willingness to protect the drinking water of British Columbians.

Don’t dump toxic soil near a water supply
Times-Colonist – February 19, 2016
Re: “Landfill battle takes a toll in Shawnigan,” Feb. 14.
If we must move contaminated soil from one spot to another, why is a location near a source of drinking water the only place we have to put it?
It’s shocking and outrageous that this situation would ever even arise. Whether you live in Shawnigan or not, this is our water!
The people of Shawnigan should never have had to fight to protect a water supply and should be reimbursed the money they had to raise, but it probably can’t make up for the distress.
Aren’t we supposed to be trying to clean up our act? Accidents happen, but this dumping of contaminated soil is deliberate.
Bottom line: You don’t put toxic material near sources of drinking water. Perhaps the technical experts and Environment Minister Mary Polak should come live in Shawnigan to prove their claims that there’s no chance of an “oops” down the line.

Shawnigan Lake: Questions Keep Mounting

When will we ever learn?
Times-Colonist – February 13, 2016
I am reminded of the words of a song from the 1960s, Where Have All the Flowers Gone, with the refrain “When will we ever learn, When will we ever learn.” This pretty much describes the situation at Shawnigan Lake.
A couple of years ago, we moved here from the Fanny Bay area. There, for more than five years, a group of courageous residents dealt with the threat of a coal mine uphill from a local drinking water source and world-famous Fanny Bay Oysters. Fortunately, the proponent, Compliance Coal, pulled its application.
No thanks to the provincial government, but mostly due to public outcry. The threat could return at any time. There is virtually no protection of drinking water in B.C.
This flagrant disregard for protection of drinking water must change. It must not be continually left up to concerned citizens’ groups to do what is fundamentally the responsibility of governments.
It is not as though protection is some kind of “rocket science.” Any Grade 3 student can assure you “water runs downhill” and that it is a good solvent; what are “mud pies” made of? So why on earth would we allow toxic waste material to be dumped upstream from a drinking water source? It is ridiculous.
Come on, folks, let’s all do our part. Persuade the government to pull the company’s permit and stop further dumping before something really bad happens.

Something stinks
Even though it has identified seven permit infractions, B.C.’s Ministry of the Environment is still allowing South Islands Aggregates/South Island Resource Management to continue to accept contaminated soil at its dump at Shawnigan Lake.
This also means the continuation of the daily convoy of dozens of sulphur-laden tandem truck loads along the Trans-Canada Highway from Nanaimo to Shawnigan Lake.
It also means the continued string of barges that will bring in poisonous soil from Port Moody’s Pacific Coast Terminal dredging to Nanaimo’s harbour and community.
Something smells rotten and it’s just not at the dump site.
